Everything happens for a reason — especially breakups!

That’s how Miley Cyrus feels about her 2013 split from her fiancé Liam Hemsworth. The pop star stopped by Sirius XM’s Hits 1 radio show on Friday, May 12 and she opened up about why she thinks their little hiatus was for the best — and she even gave her younger self some great relationship advice.

“I think, know that everything is happening for the right reason,” the 24-year-old said. “And I knew that when we weren’t together the first time — I didn’t know if that was the end of it, or knew if we were going to get back together again, but knew that wherever I was going I was on the right path.”

Miley and Liam famously met in 2009 on the set of Nicholas Sparks’ romantic drama The Last Song. They made their red carpet debut as a couple in March 2010, and they broke up and got back together a handful of times before the end of the year. But by April 2011, they got back together for good and they confirmed their engagement by June — but they called off their engagement the following September.

But after about three years apart, they were able to reconcile and by January 2016, not only was their engagement back on — but Miley even moved back in with Liam — and the couple is still going strong today. Miley gushed over why she thinks their breakup made them a stronger couple.
