Kim Kardashian‘s fiancé took to Twitter on Monday, Nov. 9. after finding himself on the receiving end of rampant criticism following a fake interview which surfaced over the weekend claiming the outspoken rapper called himself “the next Nelson Mandela.”

West responded to the doctored dialogue, which first appeared in The Daily Current, and paid tribute to the 95-year-old South African leader on the social media site.

“Respect to Mandela, his family and his legacy,” North West‘s dad wrote this morning. “Despite recent mediareports, I’ve never said anything to dishonor or trivialize the life or transition of one of the most inspiring leaders.”

“I’d like to address the false stories and noise that have been engineered by the media,” he continued. “At a young age my mother taught me the importance of his work. Mandela sacrificed his life for the betterment of mankind,” he tweeted before concluding, “Thank you, Mandela, for your life’s work and may it serve as a guiding light to illuminate our future.”

The 36-year-old star’s fake interview caused an Internet uproar over the weekend after many were falsely led to believe that Kanye said “he’s going to be a bigger hero than he [Mandela] ever was.”

“Nelson Mandela did a lot of good work, don’t get me wrong. But I think I’m on track to do something even bigger,” the website reported West as saying. “I liberate minds with my music. That’s more important than liberating a few people from apartheid or whatever. Not to say Mandela wasn’t for real. I have mad respect. I just think we need to keep things in perspective here. Anyone can be replaced. And I think I’m well on my way towards being the next great black leader. I’m already worshiped around the world. And there’s more to come.”

While Kanye’s fabricated comments clearly made headlines, the hip-hop star, who is known for his outspoken ways, has since insisted he has nothing but respect for the former South African president.

West’s fiancée also took to Twitter to pay tribute on the day of Mandela’s passing, writing, “R.I.P. Nelson Mandela…may your principles of love be the guiding light for future generations.”Follow @Infocelebrity on Twitter!
