The festival’s promoter, Made Event, announced that the third and final day of the New York event was canceled due to two deaths that are believed to be drug related.
A statement posted today on the event’s Facebook page said “the founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend. Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today.”
According to CNN, the deaths of a 23-year-old male and a 20-year-old female may have involved the drug MDMA, either in Ecstasy pills or in its “pure” powder or crystal form, known as Molly.
Four others remain hospitalized and critically ill, with the causes still under investigation, Sgt. Lee Jones, a New York Police Department spokesman, said.
Electric Zoo began in 2009 and features numerous big name EDM deejays and producers performing on multiple stages. Over 100,000 people attended the event last year. This year’s fest began on Friday and was scheduled to run through tonight.
