Jason Blum‘s low-budget thriller, which stars Ethan Hawke and Game of Thrones‘Lena Headey, took the No.1 spot at this weekend’s box office with $36.4 million, ending Fast & Furious 6‘s two-week reign at the top.
The Purge, which cost only $3 million to make, shocked analysts, who expected the film to only rake in about $17 million.
Although Fast & Furious 6 was knocked down a spot, the film still pulled in strong numbers, landing in No. 2 with $19.8 million.
Now You See Me also dropped a spot from its opening weekend, grabbing third in this weekend’s box office with a close $19.5 million.
Meanwhile, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson‘s comedy The Internship debuted in fourth with $18.1 million, making it the lowest debut for a Shawn Levy film in a decade, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
